5 Reasons Christians Are Having Abortions

Christian Pregnant Crop 1Abortion statistics show us that many Christians are falling for the lure of the world’s standards instead of God’s standards. Thirty-seven percent of women obtaining abortions identify themselves as Protestant, and 28% identify themselves as Catholic (Abort73.com). So, why are those who profess themselves Christians, choosing abortion?

It’s complicated. But here are a few insights to help us understand:

1. They are not saying no to temptation.—It’s a simple fact of life. The seduction and pleasure of sex is very difficult to say no to. That little word, “No,” is far from our minds and lips when we’re in the moment. So when we follow our desires, we can end up with an unexpected pregnancy. (Of course we are not talking about an assault situation)

2. They are not clear about God’s word.—Does God clearly say, “Thou shall not abort your child.”? His word does not spell it out like that. If we don’t know the Word of God, it can be a license to say yes to abortion when we are in a jam and fearful of what lies ahead.

3. They fear pastors, Christian family and friends—What would the congregation say if they knew they had sex before marriage, and are now pregnant?—Are Christians judgmental? Yes, we are, or can be. It’s a fearful thing to try to live up to the expectations of some of our fellow Christians. Covering up and avoiding disclosure is much easier, for the moment.

4. They have the same life issues as non-Christians.—Christians give the same reasons for wanting an abortion as non-believers—Can’t afford a baby, can’t tell parents, (and some cases, parents force abortion) will interfere with career and school plans etc.

5. They are pro-abortion.—Believe it or not, there are Religious and/or Christian abortion supporters—Catholics for a Free Choice,  Evangelical Lutheran Church, and United Church of Christ.  (See these websites.)(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholics_for_Choice), (http://www.pewforum.org/2013/01/16/religious-groups-official-positions-on-abortion/)
