Recently there was a story about an adventurous little 3 year-old girl who trotted into the woods near her home when no one was looking. When her mother noticed she was gone, she was devastated; the temperatures would hover at freezing that night and the little girl only had a shirt and pants on. But 15 hours later, she was found, safe, and alive: thanks to her constant companion, her loving, protective dog. “She was able to stay warm with the dog,” said Sgt. Jeff Newnum. “It’s probably one of the things that saved her life.”
This story is not the only episode of a faithful canine, watching over, protecting it’s best friend. It’s nature at its best.
So, what happens to us Moms, me included, when we lose the instinctive behavior to protect? How do we choose abortion? Why do we give up our children to the forces of this world? How did we come to the point of, “It’s me or you.” ?
We have plausible reasons, we have plausible excuses, and we have a legal right to choose. So, out the door goes our instinct to protect our child, and in comes our instinct to protect ourselves.
Many of us wish we could turn back the hands of time… have our children back, safe in our arms. We would make the right choice this time. We would choose to stick with our child through the cold, scary night in the woods.
If only we could turn back time.
